For parents

Children feel emotions in their whole body before they have words for them. These adventures give feelings friendly names and shapes, so your child can point at them instead of being swept away. Read slowly, and let your child pause on the pages that feel most like them. There is no right answer to give — noticing is the whole win.

These are stories, not therapy. If you ever have a worry about your child’s wellbeing, your health visitor, GP or school are the right next step.

Chat about it afterwards

  • Which feeling in the story felt most like one of yours?
  • Where do you feel a big feeling in your body?
  • What helped the character's storm get smaller?
  • Who would you like to sit with you when a feeling is big?
  • What could we try together next time a big wave comes?
